Cody McCoy and Bob & Matthew Hanson put a fishing charter at the top of their vacation itinerary.
A Cape Cod Fish Tale
Although Cape Cod has 365 ponds, many stocked with bass, salmon and trout, if you're looking for an unforgettable angling excursion, head for the salty deep.
If you want to "fly solo," surfcasting is permitted from any outer beach, and your chances of a respectable catch are good. Bass River, separating Dennis and Yarmouth, is also an excellent fishing hole. Try casting from the bridge on Route 28 or from the jetty at West Dennis Beach. If you fancy yourself a captain, you can also rent a boat and design your own adventure.
However, whether you have years of angling experience or absolutely none, if you want to fish like a native--join one. Fishing charters depart daily from every Cape Harbor for half and full day excursions. While some specialize in river and in-shore fishing, others head for the deeper waters of Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket Sound.
The intended quarry (including flounder, striped bass, bluefish, tautog, scup, fluke, shark and tuna) varies, so match your charter with your desired catch.
Most charter fares include all gear and bait. More times than not, crewmates clean your catch, leaving you more time to enjoy the excursion.
Because Cape captains probably spend more time on the water than on land, you'll benefit from their experience. On a recent excursion, the bass were biting fast and furious so anglers caught their quota early on that day. Without missing a beat, the captain changed course and quarry; the party spent the rest of the day landing one feisty bluefish after another.
Whether you're angling for stripers or blues, may this fisherman's prayer, author unknown, be answered:
Lord, suffer me to catch a fish
so large
that even I, in talking of it aftward,
shall have no need to
lie.
