Cape Cod Baseball League: The Closest Thing To The Majors

One of our favorite summer outings is as All-American as apple pie: baseball. Not the kind of baseball which calls for advance planning, pricey tickets, parking fees, long lines and mediocre seats. Like most everything else about the Cape, baseball here is comfortable and casual. Just park your car near the field, donate the optional $1, find a spot on the grass or bleachers, get a snack from a local vendor and enjoy outstanding competition in a small-town setting.

Without question, The Cape Cod Baseball League is as close to professional play as you can get. For over a century, thousands of future big leaguers have played on Cape fields. In fact, over 150 former Cape Leaguers made last year's MLB roster. Before joining the majors Albert Belle, Craig Biggio, Will Clark, Carlton Fisk, Nomar Garciaparra, Chuck Knoblauchs, Frank Thomas, and Mo Vaughn stepped up to the plate here.

The players come from the most reputable baseball programs across the country. They are the cream of the crop, the players most likely to go on to the pros. While here, they board with local volunteers, work part-time and--play ball! They even use NCAA-sanctioned wooden bats instead of the aluminum bats required for college-play.

But the Cape league isn't just a place for players to polish their skills with high-caliber teammates and opponents; it is a place to be seen. By the scouts. Chances are, at any game you attend, you'll see someone official-looking, scrutinizing the players, jotting down stats and notes. Year after year, this is where the recruiters find the best players in the country.

There are ten baseball league parks across the Cape. The five-team East and West divisions include the Brewster Whitecaps, Chatham Athletics, Harwich Mariners, Orleans Cardinals, Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, Bourne Braves, Cotuit Kettleers, Falmouth Commodores, Hyannis Mets and Wareham Gatemen. Each team plays a 44-game regular season. (See our Daily Calendar listings for scheduled games near you.)
