Bluefish: Bulldog of the Sea
During the season, this incredible, swift predator swims along the Atlantic Coast, presenting saltwater anglers some thrilling fishing--and very tasty eating afterward.
There are only 3 species in the bluefish family; only one inhabits North American waters. They can grow to 3½ feet and weigh up to 31 pounds.
These feisty fish are known for their voracious appetites. Each day, they eat twice their weight in other fish and squid, and often kill more prey than they need to eat. In fact, bluefish reportedly feed until full, regurgitate, then feed again. For this reason, weighty catches are common.
Catching sight of these aggressive hunters in a feeding frenzy is a truly awesome sight. One summer a school of Blues chased smaller fish into a cove at the end of Commercial Street in Provincetown. Along the shore, the water turned white from flashing teeth and tails. Some Blues chased their prey right up onto the sand.
Obviously, wading into this maelstrom is not wise. Razor sharp teeth give blues the nickname "snappers" or "choppers," and these fish have been known to attack people. However, because their intense feeding activity makes them less attentive to their surroundings, Blues can be easy to catch. Often, they'll bite at anything--baited or not. One sport fisherman reported he once caught over twenty Blues in thirty minutes.
Saltwater fishing on the Cape does not require a license. Surfcast from any saltwater beach, or head offshore by boat. Fishing Charters depart from most Cape harbors. Local captains know the waters, increasing your chance for a satisfying catch.
A word to the wise: Clean Blues shortly after the're caught. The hyper digestive enzymes that allow them to gorge on other fish will start working on themselves if they aren't cleaned shortly after being caught.
Cooking Tip: Blues are very tasty on the grill. Marinate with a generous amount of mayonnaise mixed with Dijon mustard beforehand. Add thin slices of onion and tomato, then wrap in foil. Place the package on the grill and steam for 15-20 minutes.
