:: A Walk in the Woods:
The Old Yarmouth Nature Trails
Deep in the center of historic Yarmouth Port lies a sylvan retreat.
Right off Route 6A, the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth maintains over 50
acres of lush nature trails and pond vistas.
As you ramble along the paths, it is interesting to note that the land
once sported the Cape's first golf course. In the 1890s, a private course was
developed for the Thacher family. After decades of use, the course was allowed
to return to its natural state.
There are two trails: the main trail (approx. 1 mile) and the Miller
Pond trail (approx. 1/2 mile). The trails are even and clear with a few steep
inclines.
The main trail passes by the Kelley Chapel. Built in 1873, this
ecumenical chapel was intended to provide a place for underprivileged families
to worship. Although it is not always open to tour, the chapel is used for
special events and may be rented for weddings.
Once you have walked the trails, follow the signs to the Captain Bangs
Hallet House, the home of the Historical Society.
The trails offer a wonderful lesson in natural history. The Society
requests a meager donation of 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for children to
help maintain the grounds. Be sure to grab a trail guide as it is filled with
interesting facts about the flora and fauna in the area.
