The Chatham Fish Pier in Chatham
Walks on the Wild Side
The maps in the back of our Guide, and our features on Walking Trails in the National Seashore and state parks will satisfy most visitors. But, we will also share our off-season favorite walks as well. There aren't any signs or arrows or typical paths. These are the streets and byways which natives use, and you will probably run into us if you try them. On this page we offer three:
1.) Chatham.
A roundtrip walk
from the Fish Pier (above) to the Chatham Lighthouse is 2.5 miles. Enjoy vistas
of the Outer Beach, the Breakthrough and Atlantic the whole way. Park at the
Fish Pier and walk uphill (south). In front of the lighthouse, you can see the
half mile wide breakthrough in our barrier beach that has claimed a dozen
shorefront homes.

A Wellfleet "fisherman" hoisting in his catch.
2.) Wellfleet.
Begin at the
Town Parking Lot on Main Street and walk uphill past the churches. (The clock
at the Congregational Church rings ships bells instead of the hour.) Turn right
on Commercial Street (look for the fisherman on the roof a way down this
street) and continue all the way to the harbor and back on Holbrook St. Duck
Creek is on your left and Bay vistas are in front of you. The distance is 2
miles. You can lengthen the walk by continuing from the harbor to Chequesset
Point.

The Larinda docked in Buzzards Bay.
3.) Onset.
As you walk from
the bridge to the park, you will pass Victorian houses and the beach. This
roundtrip walk is about 1.5 miles. While in Onset, take a cruise out to
Buzzards Bay and the canal on the beautiful Larinda docked right at the beach.
