 The Brewster Flats

During the 1700s and 1800s, packet boat services and salt making establishments were sprinkled along this stretch of shoreline. Those strolling here during the days of Prohibition often stumbled upon cases of alcohol tossed overboard by rumrunners--literally on the run.

But today, the Brewster flats beckon beachcombers. As the tide recedes, the beach widens, unveiling at least a mile more of hard-packed sand, tidal pools and channels along Cape Cod Bay.

Watch hermit, green and lady crabs hurrying across the sand or minnows dart across tidal pools. Then, spend some time with a solitary moon snail, slowly zig-zagging to an unknown destination. Quahogs may also be under foot. Look for their small breathing holes in the sand, then start digging. (If you plan to keep your find, remember you need a license.) Gulls and a variety of other shorebirds obligingly put on a show.

You can reach the flats from any beach north of scenic Route 6A. Crosby Lane, Linnell and Ellis Landing Roads, Paine's Creek Road, Breakwater Road and Lower Hill Road all lead to a peaceful adventure on the Bay.

P.S.: Doctors still recommend a walk on this packed sand to soothe tired feet.
