Chatham Fish Pier
The Fish Pier on Shore Road in Chatham is among its most photographed spots.
The pier is just a quarter mile south of the Route 28 intersection north of the town center. The same road leads to Chatham Lighthouse.
The sights are best in late afternoon when the fishing boats return to unload their daily catch. Climb the stairs on the left side of the building and watch the activity from the observation deck. In the distance, you can see the beach houses on Nauset and North Beaches.

Fisherman "gamming" (talking to landlubbers) on the dock.
The small, sandy island is a few yards in front Tern Island. The fishermen store their traps and other gear here. It's piled high with sand dredged from the harbor last year.
Off to your right, or southeast from the deck, you can see the breakthrough a winter storm caused on the barrier beach a decade ago. Since the protection of the barrier beach was removed, a dozen homes have been swept away by the advancing seas.

Seagulls cavort on the wharf pilings nearby.
A mile further south from here, passing the windmill on the left, you'll reach Chatham Lighthouse and its free beach, created by the shifting sands. You can also see the breakthrough better here.
While you're in Chatham, take a stroll along the quaint Main Street area or return on a Friday evening for the free band concerts at Kate Gould Park.
