Provincetown Festival & Blessing of the Fleet

For over fifty years, Provincetown has honored its Portuguese ancestry with an annual "Blessing of the Fleet" ceremony. Centuries ago, before a fleet departed on a long and possibly dangerous journey, the Bishop blessed the vessels and crew. The tradition continues today, beginning with a mass at St. Peter's Church, followed by a festive procession to MacMillan Wharf and the Blessing of the Fleet ceremony.

The Blessing of the Fleet ceremony has traditionally been part of a cultural celebration. Although the festivities vary among communities, parades, fireworks and events that highlight Portuguese art, history, music, dance and cuisine surround the weekend celebration.

Provincetown continues this tradition with its annual Portuguese Festival. The festivities kick off with a Big Band concert on the grounds of the Pilgrim Monument. Throughout the weekend other bands, Portuguese dancers, music and block dances are scheduled for cultural enthusiasts.

This is definitely a festival of feasting. Sample a variety of dishes at the Portuguese Soup Tasting and the Homecoming Clam Feed - both scheduled for Friday - and don't forget to visit the food court on Saturday.

Adults aren't the only ones who will have a good time this weekend. There are a variety of kids' events scheduled. On Friday, kids can enter the fishing derby in the morning, and in the afternoon have time to hear music, see clowns, get their faces painted and more along Ryder Street. Saturday, kids games and a cookout are scheduled in the morning and kids of all ages will enjoy the cultural dances, food and events scheduled for the afternoon.

Sunday, following mass at St. Peter's Church in historic Provincetown, the Blessing of the Fleet procession will go from Prince Street to the MacMillan Wharf where at 1pm the Bishop will lead in this 53rd annual event.
