![]() The Hoxie House in historic Sandwich. Tour Historic SandwichThis is where Cape Cod begins, so it's the perfect place to discover-- or rediscover Cape Cod. The first settlers arrived from Plimoth Colony a few months after landing on Plymouth Rock. By 1638, when "eight men from Saugus" took refuge from the crowded mainland, the town had its first permanent settlement. From Route 6, take exit 2 and travel north about one mile. On your right learn about the glass-making businesses which flourished here during the 19th century at the Sandwich Glass Museum. The pieces on exhibit are marvelous... Then, backtrack a bit to the 17th century restored Dexter Gristmill on Water Street on Shawme Pond. Next door, visit the Thornton W. Burgess Museum. Although you may not recognize the name, you're certainly familiar with this author's tales of Peter Rabbit and his friends. At 18 Water Street, arrange a tour of the Hoxie House (pictured above), the oldest restored home on the Cape. Nearby Main Street will take you to our oldest inn, the Dan'l Webster, named for its famous habitee. Today, the Inn is run by the Catania family, who also run the Hearth & Kettle Restaurants and the John Carver Inn of Plymouth.
At Main and River Street, Yesteryears Doll Museum is housed in the First Parish Meeting House, established by the Pilgrims in 1638. Now, hop in the car and head for one of the following terrific destinations:Heritage Museums & Gardens (Pine and Grove Streets off Route 130) features 76 acres of beautiful grounds and gardens, an Antique Car Museum, working carousel, Military and Art Museums--and special events throughout the season. Or, hop aboard the Cape Cod Scenic Railroad for an tour of hidden Cape Cod. The train depot is at Route 6A and Jarvis Street. Call 508-771-3788 for current schedule. Finally, turn off Route 6A and head for the Bay. A stroll down the boardwalk will take across the marshland, Mill Creek and low dunes to the sandy shore of Town Neck Beach.
