Truro In Winter

Balston Beach is majestic in February

Balston Beach is at the bitter end of Lower Pamet Road off Route 6, a mile or two over the Wellfleet line south of Highland Light. This road once continued back around the north side of the Pamet River; however, the winter storms of the late 70's blew so much sand from the seventy-foot tall dunes here that the town gave up trying to keep the road open past the beach parking lot. In fact, several of the summer cottages here are still half or completely covered by the shifting dunes.

You can still see North Pamet Road across the headwaters of the marsh, and drive there by backtracking to the highway and circling around the north side of the river. Folks compare this landscape to the moors of Ireland, and the park service operates a cranberry bog on this north road. Because it was a favorite of New York shrinks, the beach here used to be called "Psychiatrist Beach" Tony Perkins used to rent one of the homes here, and the area immediately south was once a famous nude beach. The home shown silhouetted against the sky and in the inset is known as the Ozzie Ball house, named for a much beloved former owner.
