Jenny Lind Tower

Jenny Lind, called the Swedish Nightingale, was a famous opera diva of the 19th century. The legendary P.T. Barnum brought the singer to America to tour.

Once, an overbooked concert in Boston signaled trouble. The performance hall would not accommodate all ticket-holders. So as not to disappoint her fans (and indirectly cause a riot), Ms. Lind climbed the tower next to her hotel and gave a free concert to the people in the street.

In the late 1920s, the hotel was destined for demolition. A Boston lawyer and fan of Ms. Lind purchased it and moved it--stone by loving stone--to land he owned in Truro overlooking the Atlantic.

Today, you can see the 55-foot granite tower from the Highland Links Golf Course and from the ocean.
